For this year’s World Book Day (which is fast approaching) my little sister has decided to dress up as a female Sherlock Holmes. A kind of ‘Shirley’ Holmes if you a will. Naturally I offered to make the costume… and here’s my rough plan.

I drafted a rough little plan/dress-pattern for one of those TARDIS dresses. This plan is for the middle dress from the illustration. I’m ignoring the black leggings and under-shirt for the moment. Also, I chose to make it out of cotton because that is usually the cheaper option and this is, after all, just a costume.

sew up all darts
sew together all wool crepe pieces
make pockets from paisley and attach to wool crepe
sew together all paisley pieces
sew paisley lining to wool crepe

Making the shirt.

1. All the things I need

1.5m of Tana Lawn Liberty fabric
500m White cotton thread
10 Buttons
Pins
Needle
Dressmaker’s chalk
Sewing machine
Squared pattern paper
Scissors
Measuring tape
Pen and pencil

2. Getting measurements

I found it easier to get the measurements for the shirt by measuring one my mother already owns.
The fact that it is checkered made it easier to measure.
The measurements for the sleeves, however, I made up based on my own sleeve design.

3. Creating templates from squared pattern paper.

4. Cutting out pieces from the Liberty fabric.

5. Putting it all together

Darts first.
Then the pleat at the back of the shirt.
Using zigzag stitch to finish the seams.
Make collar by joining two parts of piece I and then sandwiching them between the two parts of piece II

6. Adding the buttons and button-holes, using blanket stitch to make the buttonholes by hand.

7. Finally heming the bottom of the shirt and the sleeves.

8. Complete!

Went to The Make Escape again. This time we turned up super early (too keen for crafts maybe?) and made sunglasses. This involved a pair of sunglasses, some broken jewellry/brooches, some spare fabric, and loads of uhu.

In retrospect I’ve kinda gone for a whole Pink Ladies theme. Also my uhu skills leave a lot to be desired and most pieces have since fallen off, been reglued, and fallen off again. Oh dear…

Making the Playsuit

The final pattern differed a bit from the plan for a couple of reasons.

First, I felt that if the T-Shirt part of the playsuit should be slouchy then I should make it more square than shaped. Changing the T-Shirt meant I also had to change the sleeves to match.

Second, I had a bit of an idiotic moment when I cut out the pieces for the shorts; I confused the horizontal and vertical measurements so I cut the pieces too wide and too short. The extra width wasn’t a problem because the shorts were going to be gathered anyway - hence the need for a hidden strip of elastic, which I sewed along the seam connecting T-shirt and shorts - but the length would’ve been a major problem had I not bought an extra half metre of fabric (I always leave room for mistakes). To fix the length issue I just cut out four 15 cm wide rectangles to hem the shorts, thereby adding about 6/7 cm to the length of the shorts. Disaster averted.

The Make Escape

The Make Escape is a lovely concept, a monthly craft event where people can basically share skills, promote their ventures, and, well, make things. It’s kinda like a real life Etsy.

Last night was the launch night and it coincided with the launch of DIY Couture, a book which itself is also an awesome concept.

We got there a little bit later than planned (about an hour before it ended…) but did get the chance to make brooches (the photo above is my attempt).
